about us

We launched in August 2020 with a two-fold mission:
make it easy for others to shop with purpose
+
support our local makers & entrepreneurs

hi there! thanks for stopping by.

Leela & Mariana here ~ we’re two longtime friends based in Washington D.C.

We’ve always felt strongly about purchasing from diverse makers and entrepreneurs in our city, but when Covid-19 hit, we wanted to find a way to support local brands in our community in a different capacity. That effort took the shape of a massive Excel spreadsheet, and eventually, DistrictlyLocal.com - a directory and resource for ourselves, our friends & families and others in the DC community (and beyond!) who may be looking to shop with purpose.

We're grateful to have kept our full-time jobs during the pandemic; DistrictlyLocal.com is a passion project for us outside of our 9-to-5s.

As with many classic entrepreneurial stories... we created DistrictlyLocal.com because we were keen on finding a centralized, comprehensive destination to browse and discover local DC brands, but couldn’t find one.

The directory launched in August 2020 with a focus on physical goods (so you won’t find services or restaurants listed) - you can search by keyword, filter by category, and filter by ownership to easily find Black-owned, POC-owned (now broken out by AAPI +Latinx!), woman-owned and LGBTQ+-owned brands.

Each brand has its brand logo and a short description so you can get a sense of the brand’s visual identity and product assortment before you visit its storefront.

Our hope is that you will use this directory not only for special occasions and gift shopping, but also for your day-to-day purchases of consumables (soaps! hand sanitizers! candles! protein bars! snacks! You get the idea...)
